PROFILE

Founder and associate of the architectural firm bbgl Architecture since 1970, Michel Gallienne has worked as an architect for the last thirty years with the same perseverance and enthusiasm of his debut in that discipline.  He was part of all the important projects of the firm which are mostly institutional, such as hospitals, schools, museums and concert halls.
Responsible for design at bbgl, he took charge of the principal projects realized by the firm, alone or in consortium; many of these projects were awarded prizes and mentions and highly publicized.  Having acted as chief designer or as in charge of projects, interdisciplinary coordination has no secrets for him.
Michel Gallienne having received many prizes and study grants at the Canadian level, he was able, during those sessions and advanced training in North America and Europe, to increase his knowledge of the complete progression which must be followed for an equitable and remarkable resolution of architectural complex problems.
A training session at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of Cambridge, USA, allows him to become familiar with the building industrialization.
He is regularly invited to sit on many boards and has a teaching experience of architecture at Laval University.  Added to his practice in Canada, he has made over fifty missions abroad in three different continents for the design and realization of projects, often as consulting architect with the Canadian International Development Agency.  In 1991, he was honored as Fellow of The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada for his distinguished contribution in the field of architecture.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

1972 to this date

The caribbean

Haïti, 1996:
Concept and execution of plans and specifications for the construction of the new Head Office of Promobank in Port-au-Prince.  Cost: 2,5  million $
Haïti, 1995-96:
Elaboration of a concept for a multifunctional development plan (CORAIL) on a 155 hectare site in the suburb of Port-au-Prince, in the context of an international proposal.
Haïti, 1995:
Consultant architect for a project financed by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB), concerning the restoring of schools, hospital and university infrastructures along with a few market and public places.
This mandate lasted six months and consisted, together with a local firm of engineers, in summarizing all the elements of a project and of the buildings, in producing plans, specifications in view of a possible realization.  The objective was, according to an urgency plan, to start off the building industry in that country and to provide adequate equipments.  On the whole of 24 projects, bbgl was responsible for those located in the center region, from north to south, more specifically in the localities of Jeremie, Des Cayes, Cap Haïtien and Hinche.
Haïti, 1985-89:
Architect-manager for FAMV III project in Haïti (Faculté d'agriculture et de Médecine vétérinaire) on behalf of CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency).
Pre-selection of bidders, invitations to tender, complete supervision of job sites, design of furniture manufactured in Canada and installed on the spot, analysis report.  Cost: 1,25 million $
Haïti, 1982 :
Mission under the aegis of C.I.S.O. (Canadian International Service Overseas) for the step-by-step design of a new 250 bed general hospital serving the area adjoining Port-au-Prince, Haïti.  This hospital is managed by F.H.A.S.E. (Fondation Haïtienne de la Santé et de l'Éducation), a private agency recognized of public interest.  Phase 1 "Out-patient services and Emergency station " is now completed.  Cost: 4  million $
Haïti, 1981:
Mission under the aegis of C.I.S.O. to develop a technical program of architecture and to draw-up plans of a pilot study on the new lay-out and extension of the Dispensaire Saint-Jean in Limbé, covering part of the Northern district of the Republic of Haïti.  Cost: 0,6  million $

Europe

France, Belgique, Angleterre, 1991:
Study mission of different museums and archive centers prior to the drawing-up of plans and specifications for the enlargement and improvement of Le Musée de l'Amérique française in Quebec city.
Special attention was given to underground museums, which face problems similar to those encountered in the Quebec project.  Intensive information sessions took place with the curators of each institution, also with the engineers and permanent technicians in charge of operations.
Fifteen establishments were visited and an incredible amount of information was gathered concerning the planning, the building and the maintenance of the visited museums.
Czechoslovakia, 1979:
Canadian representative in Prague, at the Theatre Quadriennal to present a project for a removable theatre, similar to the one built in Quebec City for the Théâtre du Bois de Coulonges Inc.  Cost: 0,25 million $

Africa

Morocco, 1994:
In December, M. Gallienne sets on an expertise mission with the Health Ministry in Rabat to define reference terms of a technical audit to be made at the hospital center Cheik Zaid donated by the Abu Dhabi Foundation, so as to establish the fundamental vocation of the centre, a good relation between the schedule and the realization and finally, the operational budget.
Morocco, 1975:
Visit of Berber regions:  habitat study.
Burkina Faso, 1987-89:
Consultant architect for the set-up infrastructures used as a base of operation by a Canadian Cooperation team working on an agriculture development project in the Nahouri province. CIDA project (Canadian International Development Agency).  Cost: 0,7 million $
Cameroon, 1985-87:
Design of a preliminary file and working drawings on architecture and city planning for a proposal of 1000 single and multiple dwellings in the city of Yaoundé, in association with Janin, BBGL-Richard et Desseau.  In association with Janin, BBGL-Richard and Dessau.  Cost: 90 million $
Algeria, 1984:
Member of an expertise mission in Algeria under the aegis of the Ministère des Affaires intergouvernementales du Québec, with the intention of implementing the I.N.B.A. (Institut National des Biotechnologies d'Alger), on the campus of Houari Boumediene University near Algiers. Feasibility study and programming submited to the Ministry of Education of Quebec, External Affairs.  Cost: 15 million $
Algeria, 1983-84:
Associate architects for the design, working drawings and execution of specifications for the Palais de la Culture in Algiers:  the project manager for the work carried out in Algiers, Montreal and Quebec city is Lavalin International Inc. from Montréal.  Cost: 106 million $
Algeria, 1977:
Architectural mission with French group "Ganide" with the intention of building low-cost housing in El Asnam and Tlemsane.
Ivory Coast - Mali - Senegal, 1973-74:
Visit to French-speaking Africa and participation, in Abidjan, in a measured drawing study of traditional habitat in the Senoufos and Malinkés populations.  The study was undergone on behalf of the C.R.A.U. (Centre de Recherche en architecture et urbanisme) in the University of Abidjan.
Tunisia, 1995:
Participation with a local firm to a contest for the realization of a National Cultural Centre in Tunis.  Our team is in competition for the second acceptance (1996).  Cost: 80 million $

Michel Gallienne was a student at the school of foreign languages Habib Bourgiba in Tunis, studying Arab.
